Genpact is one of the leading technology and service firms. Right now, the company is facing mounting criticism after implementing a new work policy for its employees. This work policy mandates 10-hour workdays for its employees in India. The policy has come into effect in mid-June, and it requires staff to log 10 “active hours”. The time will be tracked down with the help of the internal portal tracker.
Why an urgent Need For change in Genpact?
Defending their decision, they had said that a longer shift would help employees stay focused and complete tasks more efficiently. The company believes that having more hours in a day indeed helps to do deeper, more concentrated work without constant interruptions. With this change, it may also help that this will improve the service they provide to clients. This also helps with quicker responses and better results.
But the company also considered that this was more than the average time of working. So they are ready to provide an incentive of ₹3,000 monthly. They have also applied the price of ₹150 per extra hour.
Employees’ Reaction Over The Decision
In response to this decision, the employee’s reaction has been mixed; some are positive and some are negative. Some of the workers think the 10-hour shifts may be helpful because they may give them more time to complete their remaining tasks without any interruptions.
But, on the other hand, many of the employees are concerned about their work-life balance. They also worry that the longer hours took a toll on their health, especially on their mental health. It may have taken over their personal life. One of the workers said, “It’s already hard to balance work and life, and now they’re asking us to give even more time.”
Some of the employees also revealed that the announcement was made in a very informal way. That means it is not officially mailed by the Human Resource Manager. On the other hand, this was just announced by the Managers to their team.
Impact Of This Decision on Other Companies
India is already famous for their toxic work culture, as per the sources. And now, Genpact has released its updated policy, which may influence other companies in our country too. This is going to impact the business service sector for sure. Many businesses are shifting towards flexible working and shorter workweeks, but some of them may be influenced by Genpact for their benefit.
Some of the experts believe that this decision to increase work hours backfired on them. The previous generation may agree with it, but when it comes to this generation, which is Gen Z, they will go against this for sure. They warn that strict monitoring and longer hours might lower employee morale and increase the chances of people leaving the company.
Will It Work For The Company Or Provide Any Benefit?
Genpact also revealed that this 10-hour work policy is not permanent in the company. It may change if it does not provide any results shortly. They also plan to monitor how the policy affects their employees, their productivity, and how it is affecting them. So, in the end, the answer to whether it will work or not is only how they are applying this policy in their company. If they effectively apply them with consideration of employees’ benefits. And also it is interesting to see if this works for them and provides benefit, or if it negatively affects the company.
